The Real Milk Diet: An Old-School Raw Remedy Treats Modern Disease (Opinion)

(NewsTarget) At first glance it's hard to believe milk could have ever been considered a healing food. Aside from trite milk mustache ads pushed by the commercial dairy industry, milk usually lands on the "don't eat" list of modern diet plans. But, believe it or not, milk (in its raw form) used to be prized as a curative food. There were even medical doctors who would place their ailing patients on an all milk diet to stimulate the healing process and reportedly cure an array of conditions.

How in the world was milk successfully used to treat disease? It's very simple: the milk diet was administered with raw, unpasteurized, unhomogenized milk that came from cows who were kept on pasture and primarily fed a diet of fresh grass. If the diet had been done with modern pasteurized, homogenized commercial milk the results would likely have been disastrous. You can read more about the differences between raw milk and conventional milk in this article:

Common Diseases Healed by the Milk Diet

Before pasteurization became the norm, experts like Charles Sanford Porter, Bernarr MacFadden and Dr. J.R. Crewe swore by the milk diet and used it as therapy with a number of patients. Their reports of success span nearly every known ailment, including insomnia, stomach ulcers, diabetes, edema, constipation, tuberculosis, gallstones, indigestion, and blood pressure issues (high or low) just to name a few.

These experts also reported a general improvement in energy and even appearance in their patients. Many who were not ill would seek the milk diet as a beautification treatment, as it reportedly brought a luster and bloom back to their appearance..

How The Real Milk Diet was Administered

The milk diet protocol varied slightly among experts, but overall the fundamental approach was very similar.

- High-quality, fresh raw milk was used.

- Milk was consumed in small amounts throughout the day, generally at intervals of about 30 minutes. This was to encourage ideal assimilation without burdening digestion.

- Milk was warmed at least to room temperature before consumption. Again, this aided digestion.

- Milk was sipped gingerly a few ounces at a time, not chugged by the quart.

- Bed rest was often recommended for the most ill patients. Rest and relaxation is generally recommended for everyone attempting a milk diet for healing purposes so energy can be devoted to healing processes rather than exertion. Light movement like walking was suggested for those who could tolerate it well.

- Other suggestions to facilitate healing and detoxification included regular hot baths, fresh air, sunshine and enemas when appropriate.

How Much Milk on a Milk Diet?

The amount of milk taken by patients varied quite widely depending on a person's needs and any maladies involved. General healing recommendations included at least 4-6 quarts of fresh raw milk daily for women and 6-8 quarts for men. This was thought of as metabolically stimulating to the body, while facilitating toxin removal, healing and digestive rest.
