Should Judge Sotomayor's Diabetes Preclude Her from the U.S. Supreme Court?

(NaturalNews) In virtually all the discussions about Judge Sotomayor's health and her ability to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, there is a strange disconnect that remains pervasive in the minds of seemingly intelligent people: That the mind is separate from the body.

A U.S. Supreme Court Judge, we're told, can be unhealthy, obese, diabetic, or even on chemotherapy (Ruth Bader Ginsburg) and still somehow remain mentally fit enough to make high-level decisions regarding the interpretation of laws and the U.S. Constitution.

This idea rests on a rather bizarre assumption: That the brain is unaffected by the health of the body.

For the record, I happen to support the selection of a Latino woman for the U.S. Supreme Court. I think her background and experience would be extremely valuable on the high court. In no way am I questioning her intentions, or her integrity or her extremely valuable life experience. My question is not merely about Sotomayor, either; it is about the health of every person given power over the People: Shouldn't those with the greatest power also demonstrate the greatest levels of personal health?

Consider the mind of President Bush for a moment. Here's a case where virtually all progressives have, at one time or another, agreed that the former President's mental health was relevant to his ability to serve his country. Some of the decisions he made seemed, at the very least, mentally questionable.

A similar question needs to be posed for all our top decision makers, including Sotomayor. Her bones are so fragile, we've just learned, that she fractured her ankle walking around the LaGuardia airport. Healthy bones shouldn't fracture so easily.

Why all important decision makers should be physically fit

But in no way is this limited to Sotomayor. The health of all U.S. Supreme Court justices, in my opinion, should be strongly considered. And why stop there? Shouldn't Senators and Congresspeople also be fit and healthy before being allowed to represent the American people? One of President Obama's greatest attributes in the minds of the public, in fact, is that he still works out and maintains a relatively healthy physique. This is to his credit, as it indicates he is far more likely to demonstrate healthy, balanced brain function than a president suffering from obesity, heart disease, cancer or other degenerative conditions (Cheney, perhaps?).

These ideas are not new; nor are they "out there" in any way. When I was in elementary school, my entire class participated in the "Presidential Physical Fitness" program that has long since been forgotten. As I was in great physical shape, I earned top honors in the program and was awarded a circular patch with these four words: "Sound Body, Sound Mind."

This was back in the 1970's. This idea that physical health translates into mental health isn't new, and it's intuitively known by virtually everyone. We've all seen it first-hand, too: When friends or family members begin to suffer from diseases, their minds start to go, don't they? The sharpest minds belong to those who maintain the best physical health. This isn't a radical idea; it's common sense!

Given all this, Sotomayor may still be the best candidate for the job. But it is without a doubt a fair question to consider her health when calculating her likelihood of success (or failure) on the court. The health of key decision makers is absolutely relevant to their brain function, and their brain function is directly related to the success of the future of our nation.

Why the Next Society needs to be led by healthy people

I have publicly predicted the demise of the United States of America in the next twenty-five years or less. There's no question in my mind that America as we know it simply will not survive for lots of different reasons too detailed to explain here. My hope, though, is that a more intelligent, constructive society can rise from the ashes of America and prove to be a far more successful example of how a free nation should be configured.

In this "Next Society," as I call it, it is imperative that leaders be required to achieve and maintain superior standards of physical health. No person suffering from serious disease should be granted power over others, because disease always affects the mind at the same time it affects the body.

There is no such thing as a person with a heavily diseased body who has a perfectly healthy mind.

And you know why? Because the brain runs on blood, and whatever is in the blood inevitably affects the brain.

What is Sotomayor's diet like?

What we should really be asking here is, simply, "What is Sotomayor's diet?"

Does she eat junk food and pizza? Does she eat red meat from factory-farmed cows? Does she consume a lot of processed dairy products, caffeine and carbonated sodas sweetened with aspartame or high-fructose corn syrup?

If she does, then in my opinion she is not qualified to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Nor is anyone else who pursues such toxic diets.

But if Sotomayor's diet is compromised mainly of healthy, non-processed foods, superfoods and organic produce, then she's probably a very happy, energetic and positive person. This would be a great person to have on the U.S. Supreme Court!

Regardless of who we're talking about, Toxic foods lead to toxic decisions, and toxic decisions lead to highly destructive results when made by people in positions of power. America's coming demise, in fact, is due in large part to the toxic decisions of its leaders over the last several generations. Whether we're talking about imperialism and war, the destruction of personal liberties, or just blatant high-powered stupidity, many of the worst decisions affecting America's future were made by leaders living on angry red meat diets compounded by toxic chemical additives in foods, drugs and personal care products.

No nation can escape the natural side effects of the foods it feeds its people. If you raise a nation on toxic foods from factory-farmed animals and artificial food factories, you will ultimately create a self-destructive nation with no real future. On the other hand, if you create a nation based on the fundamentals of good health, with primarily plant-based diets that are free from synthetic chemicals and excessive processing, then you can create a nation with a strong future, where capable people routinely make wise decisions on behalf of those they represent.

Take a look around America. It is the junk food capitol of the world. Americans eat more junk than any population anywhere else on the planet. To expect us to somehow create a bright, healthy future while our bodies and minds are powered on toxic junk food is utterly irrational. It defies not only logic, but scientific thinking as well.

I don't know what Sotomayor eats, but I wish Sotomayor good health and a bright future, and I hope she understands how critical her diet is for the future of America.

It is no exaggeration to say that what Sotomayor eats, we all digest one way or another.

Let us hope she eats happy, natural organic foods and supplements them with nutrient-dense superfoods.
