I get a lot of email asking the same question: "Mike, if you had to take just one nutritional supplement or vitamin product, what would it be?"

Here's the answer to that question.

If I were stranded on a desert island and had to choose just one nutritional supplement to have on hand, or if I were suffering from chronic disease (like cancer, heart disease, etc.) and had to choose just one product to consume in an effort to reverse that disease, I would choose the following:

A superfoods / green foods combination supplement

In other words, I'd choose a superfoods supplement containing a number of beneficial superfood ingredients like:

  • Chlorella (powerful blood cleanser, liver cleanser, anti-cancer agent and more)
  • Spirulina (complete plant-based protein, strong anti-cancer food, outstanding minerals and trace mineral content, great for stabilizing blood sugar, outstanding brain function support, etc.)
  • Quinoa (a complete protein in a "grain," good fiber, great source of complex carbs)
  • Wheat grass (loaded with phytonutrients, chlorophyll, vitamins and minerals)
  • Flax seeds (health omega-3 oils, impressive prevention of heart disease and atherosclerosis)
  • Sprouts (broccoli sprouts, clover sprouts, alfalfa sprouts and barley sprouts are all powerful "foods as medicine" containing high-density nutrition and disease fighting phytochemicals)
… and I'd make sure to avoid unhealthful sweeteners like aspartame, fructose, sugar, sucralose or any sweetener other than stevia.

Which products meet these criteria?

I currently recommend two products that meet these criteria. (Note: as always, I have absolutely no financial involvement in any companies or products listed here. Nobody pays to be listed here. This is 100% based on merit.)

First, there's the Alive! Whole Food Energizer by Nature's Way, a pill form supplement that provides everything I've mentioned above, plus nutrients from fruits, berries and medicinal mushrooms. You can buy this at any health food store or even many grocery stores. I take Alive! on a daily basis and strongly recommend it to others. I think it's the best brand-name superfood pill on the market today. It fights disease, promotes healthy metabolism and contains a healthy dose of superfoods. Don't limit yourself to just one or two pills a day, by the way: I've taken as many as ten pills a day. These are foods, not drugs.

There's also an outstanding supergreens formula now offered by Garden of Life called The Perfect Food. I've tried this myself and I think it's a good product, but it didn't offer quite as much "green density" as the other superfoods recommended above. Still, I strongly support the Garden of Life philosophy, its CEO (the author) and its product line. You can't go wrong with these products. Like all supergreens formulas, these Garden of Life products also prevent and even help reverse disease. They provide outstanding nutrition to any human being.

Where do you get this stuff?

Any health food store carries the brand-name supplements. You can find them at local health food stores or through online vitamin sources like Swanson Vitamins, Vitamin Shoppe, or Vitacost.

So there ya have it! If I were stranded on a desert island, and had to choose just one product to keep me alive and in good health, I'd choose one of the following:

… and I'd be in outstanding physical health on that island, too! Yes, you can actually live on these superfoods.

Questions and Answers about these supplements

Can these superfood products cure disease?
They can absolutely help reverse chronic disease. Here's the truth about this: the FDA has outlawed nutritional supplement companies from telling the truth about their own products. If Nature's Way, for example, stated on the label, "this product prevents chronic disease," the FDA would consider that to be an unsubstantiated health claim (even though it's true!) and would ruthlessly attack the manufacturer, eventually putting them out of business. This is what happened to Lane Labs, which sold MGN-3, a product that actually worked to cure cancer by boosting patients' immune systems through the use of medicinal mushroom extracts widely known for their anti-cancer effects in Japan.

But since I don't sell these products, nor do I financially benefit from their sale, I can tell you the truth about them. And the truth is this: these products both prevent and fight chronic disease through superior nutrition. I know I will never have cancer, diabetes, heart disease, mental depression, osteoporosis or any other popular chronic disease because I take these superfoods daily. It's simple cause and effect: my body will always prevent those diseases because I'm getting outstanding nutrition. Plus, I don't eat all the foods and food ingredients that cause disease (soft drinks, white flour, packaged meat, processed foods, fast foods, snack foods, etc.).

However, it is important to note that these superfoods cannot undo disease-promoting eating habits if you continue to pursue the Standard American Diet. In other words, if you're silly enough to keep eating pizza, drinking cow's milk, wolfing down brand-name breakfast cereals, eating fried foods, and so on, one pill a day of Alive Whole Food Energizer isn't going to keep you disease free. There's simply too much poison entering your system in the form of toxic food ingredients from all the processed foods you're eating. If you want to be disease free, you have to do two things together: 1) Get superior nutrition through superfoods, and 2) Avoid the foods and ingredients that cause chronic disease in the first place.

Remember: most Americans are over-fed and under-nourished. We suffer from obesity and malnutrition at the same time because our foods are nutritionally depleted!

Will these superfoods cause me to lose weight?

Same answer as above: yes, they will help you lose weight, but only if you avoid the foods and lifestyle habits that promote weight gain in the first place. One thing I've noticed is that consuming these superfoods stops food cravings because it gives your body the nutrition it's dying for (literally). And by stopping food cravings, you can then more easily control your food intake and, accordingly, lose weight.

But once again, there's no way you'll lose weight on any superfood if you continue to consume white bread, soft drinks, ice cream, cookies, crackers, pasta and other refined carbohydrates. You can't undo a lifestyle of terrible food choice by swallowing a couple of superfood pills, no matter how good they are.

Did you eat these superfoods to get healthy?

Absolutely! As you know, I've posted my own laboratory-verified health statistics online for the whole world to see. My HDL chlesterol is 62. My LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) is 67. My blood pressure is 105 / 60. You can see all the stats yourself if you're curious.

I achieved this level of health by eating large quantities of the very same superfoods I'm recommending here. In fact, every single morning, I have the exact same breakfast:

My breakfast:

  • One scoop of supergreens powder
  • One scoop of peanut butter powder
  • One tablespoon of extra virgin coconut oil
  • 16 oz. of raw home-made almond milk
  • 1 scoop of whey protein (Jay Robb's) or soy protein
  • 1 teaspoon of coral calcium powder
  • 1 teaspoon of stevia extract powder
I blend, pour and drink it. Every morning. I can't remember when I last ate a breakfast of pancakes, eggs, toast, orange juice and all the other garbage foods that pass as nutrition these days. That's the breakfast of chronic disease. If you want to die young, eat the American breakfast you grew up with (or most of us did, anyway). But if you want to live a long, disease-free life, drink your breakfast by blending up a superfoods shake like the one above. I can't guarantee you'll end up with an LDL cholesterol of 67, but I can absolutely guarantee your health will improve. It's nutritional cause and effect: you can't help but improve your health when you shift to healthy food sources.

The recipe above, by the way, is around 600 calories or so. It's a good, healthy breakfast for an active individual. If you're not engaged in regular physical exercise, you could scale it down to something more like 400 calories. Remember: add a banana at first to get used to the taste. After a month or so, you can cut the banana in half. Then after another couple of months, don't use any banana at all.
