(NaturalNews) Some people think that hypnosis doesn't work. Others think it is downright evil.

Realistically, anyone can subject oneself to hypnosis and drift into an altered state of consciousness. The power of hypnosis is real and can be used with good intentions to help heal people — or, if used wickedly, to manipulate them. Once a subject is put into a trance-like state, they are more open to suggestion. In this altered state, thoughts and ideas can be planted into their subconscious mind. These "thought seeds" may cause people to do things they normally wouldn't do.

Television advertisement and news channels can be hypnotic, if a viewer allows his or her mind to slip into an altered state of consciousness that believes, instead of questions. Television should always be watched with skepticism, cynicism, critical thinking and questioning to avoid being hypnotized in a negative way.

In a clinical hypnosis session, hypnosis can be used to empower a person who lacks focus or control over an area of his or her life. Under hypnosis, a subject can focus attention and energy in a more direct way. This can be therapeutic, helping the subject gain more control over behavior and emotions.

Three students die after undergoing principal's hypnosis

In a story that puts hypnosis in a bad light, George Kenney, a Florida high school principal, has been accused of causing his students' suicides due to unauthorized hypnosis sessions.

In 2011, three of his hypnosis sessions at North Port High School were tied to the deaths of three students. 16-year-old Wesley McKinley, 17-year-old Brittany Palumbo and 16-year-old Marcus Freeman died tragically after undergoing hypnosis from Kenney. Two of the students committed suicide and one drove his car off the road and died in the wreck.

In 2012, the principal was charged for practicing hypnosis without a license. After being stripped of his teaching license and put on probation, Kenney left the school and started a bed and breakfast in North Carolina.

The three families left behind have recently been awarded $200,000 each from the school board.

Although many people rejoiced at seeing Kenney go, there are others who wanted him to return. He had such a student following that many created supporting Facebook pages: "Bring Back Dr. Kenney" and "Students in Support of Dr. George Kenney."

Speaking to Good Morning America in 2012, 20-year-old student Eric Williams said his SAT scores "went up 500 points after the hypnosis" sessions with Kenney.

Did the principal's hypnosis sessions bring about the deaths of three students?

The first of the deceased was high school quarterback Marcus Freeman. He sought hypnosis to help increase his focus on the football field. He passed away after getting into a fatal car accident in March 2011. Reportedly, principal Kenney taught Freeman how to hypnotize himself. Freeman's girlfriend, who was in the car when he died, recalled seeing a strange look come over Freeman's face when he unexpectedly veered off the interstate.

The second student to die that year was Wesley McKinley. He sought hypnosis from the principal so he could perform better at a guitar audition for the school. His friend Lyle recalls McKinley getting on the bus after the hypnosis sessions without knowing who he was or who his friends were. Strangely, he ended up hanging himself.

The third incident occurred with Brittany Palumbo, who sought hypnosis from her principal to boost her SAT scores. When her scores came back unsatisfactory, and her college prospects looked grim, she hanged herself in her closet. Her parents said the principal diagnosed their daughter with test anxiety.

Damian Mallard, the attorney who represented the heart-stricken families, said, "It's something they will never get over. It's probably the worst loss that can happen to a parent, losing a child, especially needlessly because you had someone who decided to perform medical services on kids without a license. He altered the underdeveloped brains of teenagers, and they all ended up dead because of it."

The ousted principal currently sells his own hypnosis CDs on Amazon to help students defeat anxiety and improve their performance in sports.
