(NaturalNews) Gerson Therapy™ was developed by Dr. Max Gerson in the 1930's. It was originally created as a treatment for his own migraine headaches. Since then, with the aid of his daughter, well-known health advocate Charlotte Gerson, the therapy has helped thousands of individuals achieve a better quality of life and, in some cases, a full recovery from degenerative illnesses and diseases like cancer.

Gerson Therapy ™uses extensive juice intake, organic vegetarian meals, coffee enemas and, depending on the circumstance, supplementation protocols to reactivate the body's natural ability for self-healing. On this level, the therapy is in total alignment with Essential #1 of The "7 Essentials System™. " While I agree with a lot of what it stands for, I believe that Gerson is not for everyone. Below I have highlighted what I consider to be some pros of Gerson Therapy™ as well as some definite cons to be aware of if you are considering this natural healing modality.

The Pros of Gerson Therapy™

The Gerson therapy includes detoxing with juices, 100% organic vegetarian meals, enemas to flush the body, and the right supplementation with essentials like potassium and Vitamin B-12. Who wouldn't start to look and feel great after being on a program like that for a while?

In fact, studies done over a five-year period, of patients with premenopausal breast cancer, found lower instances of recurrence as well as improved kidney and liver function while they were on Gerson. In addition, an Austrian study came to the conclusion that, in patients with bone metastases, there were lower instances of hypercalcemia and lower pain overall.

Coffee enemas are said to increase the body's absorption of Vitamin A, which boosts immune function and allows immune system cells to better fight off precancerous cells. They also increase glutathione production, a primary anti-oxidant that is manufactured in your own cells. Consuming the juice of fresh, organic vegetables and fruits, minus the fiber, floods the body with cancer-fighting phytonutrients and antioxidants.

The Cons of Gerson Therapy™

The factors that make up Gerson Therapy™'s pros are also its cons, however. If you are reading this article, then you are probably already committed to doing what you can to live healthy. If you decide to "Go Gerson," however, you are required to take that commitment to the next level. Gerson Therapy™ is a full-time job. It requires consuming upwards of 15-20 pounds of fruits and vegetables every day, juiced in a specialized masticating juicer with a separate hydraulic press, as well as administering up to five coffee enemas a day (which is essential in order to avoid a severe healing crisis). Information on the Gerson Institute website states:

"Following the Gerson Therapy requires enormous lifestyle changes which may not be tolerable or feasible for everyone, such as following a very restrictive diet-without cheating-for several years, eliminating toxic substances from the home, carefully avoiding environmental toxins, and cooking and juicing for several hours every day."

The other concern I have is the sheer amount of juice one is required to ingest every day. Remember, sugar is cancer's best friend. The over-consumption of carrot or beet juice, for example, could make matters worse, not better, for some.

I have consulted with women who were on Gerson Therapy™ for years yet did not make any progress until they changed their eating habits. There is no "cookie-cutter" anti-cancer protocol. Depending on metabolic type and the health of the GI tract, some will do better with a limited-sugar approach.

If you are considering Gerson Therapy™, get the facts first. If you decide to go this route, consult your health practitioner and then commit to doing it for the long haul and by-the-book. The journey towards breast health is always and ultimately a personal one. Only YOU can determine the commitment level and best course of action for you.
