Why we support background checks... on Obama - Who is he, really?

(NaturalNews) As President Obama presses Congress to support new gun control legislation that includes background checks on every gun buyer, the phrase "turnabout is fair play" comes to mind, for the American people know surprisingly little about a man who just began his second term as leader of the free world.

During his 2008 presidential campaign, the American people got short shrift from an adoring mainstream media, which did little to vet him as is their duty, though there were obvious glaring holes in his past.

Joseph Farah, editor-in-chief of WorldNetDaily.com, has been doing yeoman's work in attempting to properly examine and scrutinize Obama's past, and the fact that the president now wants the full weight of the federal government to be used to vet you and I if we dare to exercise a constitutional right goes beyond hypocrisy.

Defining irony - and hypocrisy

"What's the definition of irony?" he began a recent column. "How about a sitting president who, after four years, has provided next to zero validated information about himself demanding that citizens of the United States undergo more federal background checks to exercise their most basic Second Amendment rights?

"That's just one of the outrages I find in the 23 executive orders issued by the White House designed to discourage law-abiding U.S. citizens from purchasing firearms for their own self-defense and to ensure that tyrants like himself have a monopoly on force in our country," he wrote.

But there is a litany of other gaps in Obama's history that should have been filled in long ago, either by the man himself or by probing questions from duly vigilant media outlets. They include:

-- Obama's ideology - where does it come from? Obama's attendance at the radical Rev. Jeremiah Wright's Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago is well-documented. But what is less known is the ideology Wright preached. According to Brad O'Leary, author of the 2008 book, The Audacity of Deceit, Wright espoused a "doctrine of Christian Black Liberation Theology," which is different than Judeo-Christian theology and "uses the Sunday pulpit to preach victimization and promote wealth redistribution." Wouldn't the American people have wanted to know that before Obama's first term, instead of learning it afterward?

-- Academic transcripts. Nearly every major mainstream media outlet wanted GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney to release every single financial detail about himself, his family and his business dealings in the form of years' worth of tax returns, but nobody seems willing to ask some basic, obvious questions about how our current president, who spent early years growing up in Indonesia and who, as a young man, made the transition from Occidental College to Ivy League Columbia University and Harvard Law School. It is not as if they are some national secret, so why won't he release them? Or are they?

"It's not impossible to transfer into Columbia from another school and graduate in two years, but it's difficult," writes Greg Pollowitz at National Review. This fact alone makes what the president did an anomaly. And when something's out of the ordinary, like this is, questions follow. And as a Columbia grad, I am pretty curious to see how he did in the same classes I took."

Wayne Allen Root, an entrepreneur, former Libertarian Party vice presidential nominee and a former classmate of the president's at Columbia, says this about the issue:

Why are the college records, of a 51-year-old President of the United States, so important to keep secret? ... Here's my gut belief: Obama got a leg up by being admitted to both Occidental and Columbia as a foreign exchange student. He was raised as a young boy in Indonesia. But did his mother ever change him back to a U.S. citizen? When he returned to live with his grandparents in Hawaii or as he neared college-age preparing to apply to schools, did he ever change his citizenship back? I'm betting not.

Speaking of education, who paid for it? Root's angle makes sense: "If you could unseal Obama's Columbia University records I believe you'd find that [h]e paid little for either undergraduate college or Harvard Law School because of foreign aid and scholarships given to a poor foreign students like this kid Barry Soetoro (who Obama used to be known as) from Indonesia."

-- Other records. In addition to the above, the release of Obama's Selective Service registration; his Social Security records; his immigration records, to see if Root is correct; and, since he once lived in a foreign country and his father was foreign-born, how about his travel and passport records, as Farah suggests?

A compliant, like-minded media doesn't want to ask, but tens of millions of American voters should have wanted to know before this past election at least.

Then again, it's never too late. Natural News is asking for some disclosure, Mr. President.
