Several of the world's top-level scientists will gather in Washington D.C. this April for the 2005 Garlic Symposium, entitled, "Significance of Garlic and its Constituents in Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease." This conference will provide current scientific information about the effect of garlic and its constituents on health and performance. Emphasis will be placed on aged garlic extract and its actions in diseased states, specifically heart disease and cancer. The symposium will be held April 9-11, 2005 at the Georgetown University Conference Center. It is being organized by Dr. Richard Rivlin, Dr. Matthew Budoff and Dr. Harunobu Amagase, and supported by the Strang Cancer Prevention Center, affiliated with Cornell University Weill Medical College, and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Co-sponsored by the University of California at Irvine, the American Society for Nutritional Sciences and American Botanical Council, the symposium will focus on several significant garlic-related studies. Out of the 36 scientific presentations, highlights include: • Preventive and Therapeutic Effects of Garlic Against Cancer, chaired by David Heber, UCLA; • Clinical Intervention Trial and pre-clinical substantiation on Cancer using Garlic, presented by National Cancer Institute scientists, Mitchell Gail and John Milner; • Inhibition of Coronary Arterial Plaque Accumulation by Garlic, presented by Matthew Budoff, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center; • Influence of Garlic on Endothelial Dysfunction in Hyperhomocystenemia, presented by Norbert Weiss, University of Munich in Germany; • Coumadine-Garlic Interaction in the Deep Vein Thrombosis Patients, presented by Tim Macan, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center; and • Drug-Interaction with Garlic through P450 Metabolism, presented by David Greenblatt, Tufts University. Aged garlic extract is popularly sold under the brand Kyolic®. Almost 400 scientific studies have been completed on aged garlic extract, done in major universities. These studies have focused on various aspects of garlic's health benefits including the reduction of multiple cardiovascular risk factors such as cholesterol, high blood pressure, homocysteine and blood circulation. In addition, significant other aged garlic extract research has concentrated on immune enhancement, improving memory (prevention of Alzheimer's), protecting liver function and anti-cancer effects.
