Research conducted at St. Louis University finds that families who eat out are more likely to skimp on fruits and vegetables. Researcher Amanda Harrod studied young families living in Missouri. She found that about 73% of parents don’t consume five or more fruits and vegetables each day -- the amount recommended to guard against diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
Parents who frequently eat out are also less likely to have fruits and vegetables at home. The reason families gave for not eating fruits and vegetables was that they didn’t like the taste. To make advances in improving the diets of families, public health officials need to more carefully consider what people are eating when dining out.
