Pfizer Inc. said Monday it is planning a clinical study to evaluate how effective its pain medication Celebrex is in treating patients with cardiovascular problems.
- Pfizer (PFE: news, chart, profile) shares were trading up almost 1 percent at $28.78 during a generally positive session for the pharmaceutical sector on Wall Street.
- The study will be an extension of a larger study designed to measure Celebrex's effects on the cardiovascular system.
- The new study, which will include about 4,000 participants, will begin in early 2005, according to Pfizer.
- Earlier this month, Merck & Co. (MRK: news, chart, profile) pulled its arthritis pain drug Vioxx from the market after a clinical study showed that patients who took the drug for more than 18 months exhibited a notably higher incidence rate of heart attack and stroke.
