 Here's another article on the debate about whether to classify obesity as a disease. As I've written previously, this effort is really about generating more profits for Big Medicine, not about actually helping people lose weight.
Losing weight is a lot more complex than just classifying obesity as a disease and then hiking up everyone's insurance premiums to cover "obesity treatment." If you don't address the behavior and responsibility of each patient, you'll never tackle this problem.
Because being overweight is really about personal responsibility. It's not some external disease, caused by germs, that invades your body without your consent. It's the result of each individual's food choices and level of willingness to engage in basic physical activities like walking.
As Americans, we can talk like it's not our fault, and we can blame McDonalds or Ben & Jerry's, but in reality, we are the ones stuffing our own faces. I know, I've been there, too. Losing weight isn't easy, and it's something that nobody else can do for you.
