Citizen scientists develop eye drops that enable night vision for 55 yards
by Jonathan Benson, staff writer
(NaturalNews) A growing movement embodying independent, crowd-sourced science that isn't pushing a corporate agenda is making significant strides in the discovery of powerful, inexpensive, and oftentimes natural ways to treat disease without dangerous pharmaceutical drugs and surgery.
One U.S.-based "citizen scientists" group known as Science for the Masses (SftM) is a great example of this, having recently uncovered a natural substance derived from algae that apparently confers almost super-human night vision enhancements in humans.
Known as Chlorin e6, the unusual substance has long been used in the treatment of some cancers, and has also been administered intravenously as a treatment for night blindness. Based on its historical medical uses, SftM researchers decided to take a closer look at how Ce6 might serve additional beneficial purposes.
What they found is that Ce6 can be turned into an effective eye drop solution for temporary night vision enhancement, an amazing discovery that could benefit soldiers in combat, the elderly, and others.
"There are a fair amount of papers talking about having injected it in models like rats and it's been used intravenously since the '60s as treatments for different cancers," stated the lab's medical officer, Jeff Tibbets. "After doing the research, you have to take the next step."
Ce6 allows man to see specific objects, people in total darknessAccording to The Independent, the molecule, which is found in some deep sea fish, somehow enables the naked eye to see objects in the dark that would otherwise not be apparent. But the effects, say scientists, only last for a few hours before fading away.
Using one of their own as a test subject, SftM scientists administered a solution of 50 microliters of Ce6 as eye drops. Almost instantaneously, and for the next hour, the subject was able to see shapes, objects, and even people at a distance of 50 meters (or about 55 yards), in total darkness.
"We had people go stand in the woods," stated Gabriel Licina, the man who agreed to have the eye drop solution tested on him. "At 50 meters, I could figure out who they were, even if they were standing up against a tree."
Independent scientists take science seriously; don't let money-grubbing corporations control their findingsCompared to others who did not receive the Ce6 eye drop solution, and who were only able to pick out objects in the dark one-third of the time, Licina was able to successfully identify people and objects 100 percent of the time.
A few hours later, and Licina's eyesight returned to normal with no apparent side effects, suggesting that the therapy may be both safe and effective. But more research is needed, says scientists, to verify the findings.
"For us, it comes down to pursuing things that are doable but won't be pursued by major corporations," added Tibbets about the SftM philosophy. "There are rules to be followed and don't go crazy, but science isn't a mystical language that only a few elite people can speak."
According to the group's published paper on Ce6, the substance also has the capability of destroying cancer cells by harnessing energy from a low-power light source and converting it into a cancer killer. At the same time, Ce6 could still be dangerous, potentially damaging the cellular structure of the eye, admit the researchers.
Even so, the findings prove that ordinary people have the power to educate themselves and uncover scientific facts without having to be controlled by corporations, governments, or other entities with a covert agenda.
"It's more difficult to sue yourself," joked Licina about volunteering to be the human guinea pig for the project. "We have done the research, we've double and triple checked all of our sources and the journal papers."
"We are serious about what we do, we are serious about science, so that means we read a lot of journal papers."
