Harvard study links vasectomies to advanced, fatal forms of prostate cancer

by Antonia

(NaturalNews) A recent study from Harvard School of Public Health shows there to be a link between men who had a vasectomy and their risk for developing prostate cancer that could ultimately prove fatal.(1)

The vasectomy-prostate cancer link

Of the nearly 50,000 men who were studied on a follow-up basis that spanned up to 24 years, just over 6,000 prostate cancer cases were diagnosed, 811 of which were lethal. All told, men who had a vasectomy experienced a 10 percent increased risk of prostate cancer overall, and not necessarily linked to a low-grade form either. In fact, having a vasectomy was linked to higher risks of lethal (19 percent greater risk) and advanced (20 percent greater risk) stages of this cancer.(2)

Even among men who had their routine PSA screenings, the risk of lethal prostate cancer was 56 percent.(3)

However, according to Dr. Louis Kavoussi, chairman of urology at North Shore-LIJ Health System in New Hyde Park, N.Y., people should not jump to hasty conclusions when it comes to these findings. "I would be cautious about applying these findings to clinical practice right now," he says. "I think further studies really need to be mandated in a better controlled fashion."(3)

Still, study co-author Lorelei Mucci, associate professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health says that "The results support the hypothesis that vasectomy is associated with an increased risk of advanced or lethal prostate cancer."(3)

Superfoods to help combat prostate cancer

Foods that help fight prostate cancer include the effective combination of tomatoes and broccoli.(4) Green tea and turmeric are also helpful. All are considered superfoods that have the powerful ability to regulate hormones and fight cancer.

Other foods such as Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and pomegranate are also beneficial when it comes to fighting prostate cancer.(4).

Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among men, and approximately 15 percent of U.S. men have a vasectomy.(1,2)
