Raw-food eating couple completes a 15,782 km year-long marathon

by Raw Michelle

(NaturalNews) A New Zealand couple in their 60s have completed a year-long marathon on December 31 in Melbourne, running every single day of 2013. They have run a total of 15,782 km around Australia, setting a world record of 366 consecutive marathons in 366 days. Cancer survivor Janette Murray-Wakelin, 64, and her husband Alan Murray, 68, credit their raw-food diet for high energy levels and overall health.

Promoting sustainability and eating raw

The husband and wife say the goal of the run was to promote conscious lifestyle choices, raise awareness about environmental issues and promote kindness for all living beings. The couple wanted to show that eating plant-based foods made them healthier and more physically fit for a challenge of this scale. Their marathon has also helped raise funds for several charities, including Kids Under Cover, Australian Paralympic Committee, Animals Australia and the Gawler Foundation.

Diet details

The couple has reported eating up to 30 bananas per day, mixing it up with fresh nectarines, peaches and apricots, and up to four kilograms of various greens. They were also making green smoothies, consisting of spinach, kale and silver beet. Their lunches would include mandarins, oranges, melons and pineapples, while at dinner time they'd eat tomatoes, cucumbers, papayas and capsicums. Freshly squeezed juices and various fruits would be their typical snacks. The detailed nutrition plan can be found at their website, RunRaw2013 at http://www.runningrawaroundaustralia.com/.

The Murrays' story

Murray-Wakelin switched to a raw-food diet 12 years ago, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Besides eating raw, she would also choose organic and locally grown produce for her meals. Her book, Raw Can Cure Cancer: Highlights from a True Story, emphasizes the importance of plant-based foods in healing. The couple have been married for more than 43 years and have always led a physically active lifestyle. Prior to setting their world record in Australia, they participated in more than 60 international marathons, and in 2000 ran 2,282 km, the length of New Zealand, doing 50 marathons in 50 days.
