Help with chronic fatigue syndrome

by Derrell Jones

(NaturalNews) It is estimated that well over 800,000 people in the U.S. now suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome. This condition is marked by deep fatigue with sore, achy joints, sore throat, muscle pain, and an inability to concentrate to name only a few symptoms. Early on, most of the medical community dismissed sufferers as hypochondriacs or people with vivid imaginations and too much time. Those days are behind us now as most, but not all, of the medical community seems to agree that this is a very real and demoralizing condition.

Possible causes

While the true cause or causes of CFS remain unclear, there are a few probable suspects given that so many of the symptoms can be attributed to those suspect agents. It is possible that some psychological factors such as negative emotions and depression can be a cause. Emotional distress and depression both lower immune function making a person susceptible to viral and bacterial infections. It should be noted that most sufferers were generally well adjusted and the onset of depression manifested after the CFS sufferers began changing their lives.

Thyroid imbalances in general and hypothyroidism specifically are an often overlooked aspect of CFS. An under-performing thyroid will ultimately lead to malaise in the entire body system. Immune response slows and the body's ability to repair itself is diminished. Over time, infection can overwhelm the body and sluggishness leads to fatigue as repair work goes undone.

Another overlooked potential culprit has to do with dental work. Fillings containing mercury are highly toxic to the body and can be of significant detriment to our health. Dr. Bill Wesson, D.D.S. treated a female patient of his who suffered from CFS for over 20 years. No other treatment worked for his patient and her health did not improve until all the mercury-laden amalgam was removed and replaced with non-toxic fillings. She went from not being able to walk around the block to hiking in the mountains.

What can be done?

There is currently no one treatment for CFS and it may take several prolonged tries with various therapies to find relief but it is important to start. Here are a few therapies to consider on your journey:

Diet and nutrition: Avoid foods low in nutrients and high in fat and sugar. Concentrate on quality, complex carbohydrates and proteins. Organic vegetables, whole grains, beans, fish (be careful of the mercury), and organic poultry should be consumed. All natural multivitamins and minerals should be taken for proper assimilation into the body. Any refined carbohydrates (e.g. white flour, white sugar products) should be avoided completely.

Herbal treatments:
Emphasis should be given to antiviral herbs such as golden seal, licorice and echinacea.

Dental work:
If you currently have any dental work including amalgams that contain any amount of mercury, it is highly recommended that it is removed and replaced with non-toxic materials.

Ayurvedic medicine:
The elimination of toxins from the system and improving digestion is of great importance in this modality. With improved digestion, nutrients can be more completely assimilated into the body allowing for greater repair work. The elimination of toxins relieves stress on the body and gives the immune system an opportunity to rest and focus on other pathogens.

The modalities above represent a small cross section of possible solutions to a CFS problem and it will be necessary to consult with a trusted holistic-minded healthcare professional to assist with the needs of the sufferer.

With enough time, patience, and faith, a CFS diagnosis need not be lived with forever. Adopt a plan and move forward boldly towards great health.
