How to open your heart to other people

by Mike Bundrant

(NaturalNews) This week on Mental Health Exposed, I talk about how to open your mind and heart. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, I've been asking the question: What makes human beings open their minds and hearts to each other?

Clearly, witnessing suffering opens hearts. When we witness other people suffering, we typically want to help in some way. As we learn more about what people on the east coast of the U.S. are going through, I am hopeful that our thoughts, prayers and actions will support those who have been hurt.

However you plan on contributing to the relief effort - whether through financial donation, an offering of your time or through your thoughts or prayers - I am sure you agree that it is the right thing to do. As people, we will pull together and get through this. Compassion for others drives us to take care of each other during times of crisis.

I've been asking myself lately: Why aren't we more compassionate toward each other all the time? What drives compassion or lack thereof in our day-to-day lives? Is there a secret to natural compassion?

Compassion: the secret

The school of thought that came to mind in answer to the above questions is best represented by the Arbinger Institute. Arbinger is a education and consulting firm founded on the simple philosophy that we should see each other as people. When we do, we typically make the right choice. It is when we see each other as less than people - or as objects - that we create all manner of human relations problems.

In this week's episode, I draw on Arbinger's works to discuss compassion, self-deception, relationships and the art of seeing each other in the most accurate light. The most obvious fact in the world is that we are all people. When we forget that, our troubles begin.
