Ron Paul says America is 'slipping into a fascist system'

by J. D. Heyes

(NaturalNews) You may have grown weary of listening to the candidates vying for our nation's highest office in November, so I completely understand if you have all but tuned out the rhetoric and noise coming from the campaign trail. But sometimes those who seek to lead us say something so profound that it not only bears repeating, but is worth taking the time to pause and consider.

GOP presidential contender Rep. Ron Paul of Texas said during a speech in Kansas City, Mo., Feb. 21, that the U.S. is "slipping into a fascist system where it's a combination of government and big business and authoritarian rule and suppression of the individual rights of each and every American citizen."

While it may sound like just so much campaign rhetoric, the fact is what Paul said is powerful, and when taken even at face value, has implications far beyond this current campaign cycle.

Granted, it's the kind of stuff Paul, 76, a physician and 12-term congressman from Texas, has said before. It's also the kind of stuff that gets applause at rallies, headlines in the newspapers and media coverage during a general election year. But Paul doesn't say such things lightly, and that's what makes his latest comments so poignant - and important.

'Dr. No' knows

Known as "Dr. No" in the U.S. House of Representatives, the obstetrician and former U.S. Air Force flight surgeon has always had a strong anti-big government, Libertarian bent. From this perspective - and from his 24 years in office - Paul is in the unique position of being able to speak freely and honestly when it comes to issues facing the country. You can do that when you are ostracized by both the political Left and Right for your views and owe alliance and allegiance to neither (Paul has regularly beaten Democrat and Republican challengers to his seat in Texas' 14th District).

So when Paul comes to American cities and streets, it's not the ranting of some out-of-touch lunatic, but rather the nuanced oratory of a seasoned legislator unencumbered by "play along to get along" rules of party politics.

"Freedom has been tested just rather rarely in all of history. In most of history, 90-99 percent of the time, people have had to live under dictatorships. And as our government gets bigger, and violates our civil liberties with laws like the Patriot Act that invade our privacy they become more dictatorial. ... We are losing those liberties," Paul said before the Iowa caucus.

"If you want to use your property, you have to get a lot of permits. If you're in the development business, from the low-level all the way to the top, you have to get permission from the federal government," he continued.

Speaking the inconvenient truth

You read about such losses of liberty - regarding your health freedom, your privacy, your property and your livelihood - as well as the affects of the Nanny State, everyday here at NaturalNews. So you know what Paul is saying rings true, even if you won't hear the other candidates talking about such issues, either on the campaign trail or in the "polite" company of the political and corporate elite.

But the fact remains, you can't have the kind of access Paul's had to the halls of power for as long as he has had it, believing as he believes that the federal government has become far too expensive and intrusive, and not notice the pendulum of freedom swinging towards the fascism he believes is our future.

That's why what Paul says on the subjects of freedom and liberty and government matters so much - because he has the experience to know what he's talking about and the political independence to not care who gets nervous when he speaks.
