Jedi mind tricks for anxiety

by Mike Bundrant

(NaturalNews) The Jedi understand that fear and anxiety are natural phenomena you can't live without. If you were incapable of fear, then you might not hesitate to jump off a cliff just to see if you could fly. Anxiety is the body's natural mechanism to get you to pay attention to danger. Without it, your imagination might win over danger and "danger" would not be danger as we know it. Appreciation of the role of anxiety is the foundation of all emotional self-management. Accept. Anxiety - even unwelcome or untimely anxiety - is a primeval sign that you are alive and well.

Of course, accepting what bothers us most is an impractical solution for most and may take years to complete. Along the way, when fear and anxiety spill itself into non-emergent areas of life, the Jedi employ a few tricks to keep fear in its place while working on the deeper acceptance issues.

Here is the Jedi mind trick for today.

Learn that emotions are waves. The roll in.... they roll out. This is inevitable. An emotion cannot hold you permanently. Every individual wave of emotion is merely a temporary state. Your mind and body are constantly in motion and are, in fact, incapable of maintaining a permanent, singular state of being. We're dynamic by nature and time rolls on, utterly unstoppable.

This is something you may forget in those moments when you are full of fear. In fact, those who suffer attacks of anxiety report that, in the midst of panic, their perception of the future is blown out. In other words, an anxiety attack is directly correlated with a complete future black out. In those all consuming, fear filled moments, the perception that time is moving on and emotions come and go - vanishes. This may be the very structure of panic.

Imagine that when you begin to feel a sense of irrational panic approaching that you know, beyond any doubt, that the feeling is temporary and natural and that in a few moments you'll feel fine again. If you knew this were true, you might relax a little more.

Do this short exercise.

Write down on a piece of paper your last several episodes of fear or anxiety. Do it in a certain way that respects that time moves on and emotions are temporary, however. Write down what you were doing before you were afraid, what happened as you experienced the fear and then what you did after the fear was gone. Before. During. After. Do this with at least five episodes, or until you "get" that your fear has a beginning, middle and end. It comes and goes in waves. Whenever it has come, it has gone just the same. Emotions are waves. When you get this, the trick is complete.
