Use licorice root to treat adrenal fatigue

by Elizabeth Walling

(NaturalNews) Licorice root is a natural herb used by many holistic health practitioners for various health and wellness needs, including the treatment of adrenal fatigue. In fact, many herbalists recommend licorice root to boost adrenal health.

The adrenal glands are responsible for releasing hormones in response to physical, emotional, or even chemically-induced stress. Stress, in turn, often causes adrenal fatigue and stamina issues. Licorice root has been shown to boost energy levels as well as to increase endurance by regulating the production of hormones in the adrenal glands.

Popular since ancient times, licorice root is still the second most-often prescribed herb in Chinese medicine. In today's society, fatigue can be brought on by many things such as fear of losing one's job, relationship issues, lack of sleep, or pregnancy. Such stressors cause the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline, cortisol, and other hormones. If the stress isn't relieved, these hormones can build up, resulting in high blood pressure and adrenal exhaustion. All of this can cause fatigue of varying levels.

Brewing and consuming one cup of licorice tea each day can restore proper adrenal function, allowing a stress-affected person to feel more energetic and better able to cope with stressful situations. Prepare the tea using dried or powdered licorice root, steeping one teaspoonful in one cup of boiling water for three to five minutes. Licorice root is strongly flavored, so adding a small piece of cinnamon stick, a drizzle of honey, or a teaspoon of peppermint leaves can temper the taste. Licorice root can also be taken in tablet or capsule form. Ground licorice root can also be used in cooking and baking.

There is some evidence to suggest that high doses of licorice root or extended use of it could cause serious side effects such as water retention, high blood pressure or headaches. Anyone who suffers from high blood pressure, diabetes or migraines should avoid licorice. Also, while taking licorice root, plenty of potassium-rich foods should be consumed. Some examples include bananas or avocados.

In general, low or occasional use of licorice root is considered by many to be a beneficial treatment for adrenal gland issues. It is a natural and well-established herb with a long history of successful use.
