Feds target pomegranate juice company for making legitimate health claims

(NaturalNews) The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is at it again in its crusade to censor the truth about the healing power of food from the general public. Its most recent attack against POM Wonderful, creators of the popular pomegranate juice sold in curvy bottles, is an attempt to muzzle not only free speech rights, but those backed by credible scientific evidence.
According to the FTC, Lynda and Stewart Resnick, owners of POM Wonderful, are in violation of federal law because their advertising makes "false and unsubstantiated claims" about the health benefits of pomegranates. But mounds of scientific research disagree, which show that pomegranates are a highly beneficial fruit packed with numerous health-promoting compounds and nutrients.
POM Wonderful has spent more than $34 million supporting research into the health benefits of the extracts found in pomegranates. Among this research is sound evidence that the polyphenols in pomegranates aid in muscle recovery, improve cardiovascular health, prevent prostate cancer, treat diabetes and improve erectile function. Pomegranate juice is also low on the glycemic index scale, is highly bioavailable and is rich in powerful antioxidants.
Other independent and academic studies have illustrated the same benefits, as well as that pomegranates improve digestion, reduce the risk of breast cancer, decrease inflammation and improve brain health and memory.
But the FTC has decided that the facts are irrelevant, choosing instead to waste valuable time and taxpayer resources pursuing a company that produces a high-quality, nutrient-rich product that continues to improve the health of millions who drink it regularly.
POM Wonderful has indicated that it plans to contest the FTC's complaint as being invalid and an unlawful violation of free speech rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution.
