GreenSingles.com Helps People Find Eco-Friendly Soulmates

(NaturalNews) In a column published in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Diane Mapes, author of "How to Date in a Post-Dating World," reviews the options available for ecologically conscious singles.
The green singles concept goes back more than 20 years, but really picked up about five years ago as a plethora of specialty dating sites started to hit the Internet. Yet of all the explicitly eco-dating sites that Mapes tried out, the one to return the most options was one of the first: GreenSingles.com. Launched in 1985, Green Singles helps to connect singles with a "global consciousness influenced by holistic philosophies, green politics and a willingness to explore the mind, body and spirit." Mapes found 71 possible dates on the site in the greater Seattle area.
The only site that returned more matches was DemocraticSingles.net, which currently has more than 25,000 singles signed up, 86 of which Mapes considered potential Seattle-area dates.
Other sites returned markedly fewer Seattle options, including Earth Wise Singles (ewsingles.com, 21 matches) or Green-Passions.com (only four). The less specifically focused site EthicalSingles.com, which also includes singles concerned with human rights issues, came up with no matches in Seattle.
There are even opportunities for ecologically conscious singles looking to take part in the speed dating phenomenon. Portland, Ore.-based Pedalpalooza recently organized a speed-dating bike ride involving 40 people, while GreenSpeedDating.com encourages singles set up eco-focused speed dating events wherever they live.
Finally, for those preferring a slightly less structured dating experience, SeattleGreen Drinks.org regularly organizes small "Green Lunches" in which people concerned about the environment can get to know each other, as well as much larger monthly gatherings.
While most green dating sites require membership fees to join, Mapes notes that those who donate to certain causes can sometimes qualify for discounted or free memberships. Other sites, such as GreenSpeedDating.com, donate proceeds to ecologically conscious projects.
