Falling temperatures increase the need for pet owners to ensure their pets' health

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The California Democrat warns that falling temperatures and the onset of winter weather increases the need for people to take preventative measurements for their pets.

Just because a pet is kept indoors does not mean that it is safe from getting sick because of the cold weather. If your pets bed is kept by a door that is not used frequently it is not a bad idea to place and old rug or towels over the bottom of the door to prevent any drafts. It is important to remember that many times in the winter cats seek shelter in the motor of vehicles. For both humans and animals alike staying warm usually requires extra calories, so check with your veterinarian for more information about how much you should increase your pets food intake. Certain alcoholic beverages, candies, holiday plants, bones and other food scraps can be toxic for pets. Be sure to keep an eye out for any ribbons or other decorations that could get wrapped around your pets neck or that they could possibly choke on. Also be sure and check any extra electrical cords, it is recommended that electrical cords either be taped or tacked down. While watching out for dangerous items is a year round job some mainly holiday items to pay attention to with your pets safety in mind incudes plants, decorations, and even gift items. Holiday decorations to pay a particular eye to include angel hair (spun glass), tree preservative solution, snow sprays and flocks, ornaments, tinsel, fire salts and bubbling lights. Some of the ingredients in certain types of the salt can be toxic so be sure to read the labels and keep the salt stored in an area where your pet does not have access to it. As usual if you notice your pet behaving out of the ordinary, or acting sick contact your veterinary office immediately.
