Toyota introduces Camry with hybrid engine

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Toyota recently revealed the newest version of its popular Toyota Camry, which will now be available with a gasoline-electric hybrid engine that will give it better mileage and make it more environmentally friendly than a standard model.

Toyota unveiled the newest version of its hugely popular Toyota Camry on Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new Camry is more powerful and more posh than its predecessor. Its design is less bubbly and has a steeply sloping rear windshield and smaller stretch of trunk. New technology includes an air-filtering system designed to eliminate air contaminants like mold or allergens. But most importantly, the ubiquitous, best-selling sedan is available with the gasoline-electric hybrid engine, which Toyota says will yield much better mileage than a standard Camry. "Our intention with the 2007 Camry was to move the goalposts,'' said Don Esmond, senior vice president of automotive operations. "As I am sure you see by now, a play-it-safe redesign of the Camry was out of the question.'' While the Ann Arbor-based Toyota Technical Center had a big role in the launch of the new Avalon at last year's show, engineers there didn't have much to do with the design of this sedan. However, the 2007 Toyota Tundra pickup truck, which will be unveiled in a few weeks at the Chicago Auto Show, was engineered in Ann Arbor. Though not designed at TTC, the Camry was certified by Toyota engineers there. All the cars Toyota brings to the North American market go through the center to be certified for pollution emission standards. In fact, that aspect of testing is the reason Toyota located in Ann Arbor. The National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory on Plymouth Road has enticed many foreign automakers to establish at least an outpost in this area. The Camry, Toyota's top-selling car, sold 432,000 cars in the U.S. in 2005, almost as much as all of the Hyundai brand vehicles combined.
