Twenty-one women pay the price for Manchester hospital's breast cancer mistakes
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
In the United Kingdom, Trafford General Hospital and the North Manchester General are under fire after 21 patients were misdiagnosed during breast cancer screenings and given assurance that they were healthy.
A woman had to have a breast removed after a radiologist failed four times to spot that she had cancer, it emerged yesterday.
The doctor assured hospital colleagues that Barbara Daly was clear of the illness.
Within weeks Mrs Daly, 56, a former hairdresser, had a mastectomy.
Last night, her daughter, Lynda Campbell, 37, said she had searched the internet and uncovered one of the tell-tale signs missed by the radiologist.
"My mum has been through hell," she said.
"We said at the time that anyone can make a mistake but mum had a scan, a mammogram, a fine needle biopsy and then a further biopsy.
That's four missed readings - all by the same man.
I think he should be made to apologise."
Mrs Campbell, a mother-of-three from Urmston, Manchester, believes the doctor, who has not been named, should either undergo a period of retraining or remove himself from "that kind of practice".
A report published on Monday revealed that 21 women with breast cancer were wrongly given the all-clear while patients at Trafford General Hospital and the North Manchester General.
Concerns were first raised last April and the radiologist was suspended.
Mrs Campbell recalled taking her mother to Trafford General in October 2003: "She had a mammogram and a scan and they also took some fluid.
When we went back, the consultant told her, 'There's no cancer.
He was smiling and we were obviously both delighted."
"Mum is a very proud and glamorous lady and she's obviously dismayed at having lost a breast."
Mrs Daly has engaged a solicitor to take up her case.
Her daughter insists that she is only doing so "to make sure that nothing like this happens to any other women".
