At the Silverton Integrative Medicine Centre, Lorin Johnson provides an insider's look into the practice of medicine that combines naturopathy and oriental medicine.
While working for Salem Hospital as a nurse, Lorin Johnson saw the good and the bad of traditional medicine.
There are people who really need the pills, but there are a whole lot who don't."
"I love Oriental medicine and the way people took care of each other," Johnson said.
Johnson is now bringing that integrative approach to Silverton, along with Dr. Lee Samatowic.
Samatowic is a naturopathic physician and will combine her practice with that of Johnson, who is an Oriental medicine specialist offering acupuncture, herbal medicine, tuina, qigong and reiki.
Johnson said that alternative medicine can diagnose and treat anything traditional medicine can.
She said the real idea behind alternative medicines, like naturopathy and Oriental medicine, is to get to the root of the problem and treat the cause, not just the symptoms.
Johnson said things like diabetes and heart disease -- some of the biggest killers in today's society -- are mostly preventable diseases.
"Most of us don't have the background to tell us, 'What are we eating?
Johnson and Samatowic can also run lab tests for their patients, learning more about their health through traditional medical tests as well as other alternative methods.
Both women said they will work with anyone, and they're also willing to turn patients over to medical doctors if that is what is needed.
"We would love it if there were more integration," Samatowic said.
She said it's the only place in the country with top medical schools in traditional medicine, naturopathy, oriental medicine, chiropractic and massage, and it's one of the only places that encourages interaction between those fields.
"We want to make a one-stop shop where you can get the optimum treatment," Samatowic said.
