Doctor draws from conventional and alternative medicine to benefit his patients

PalmBeachPost.com interviews Daniel Nuchovich, who, along with the staff of The Jupiter Institute of the Healing Arts, works to integrate the conventional methods of internal medicine with alternative practices, including acupuncture and nutrition guidance.
"Over the years I've seen many of my patients being frustrated with conventional medical care," said the Southern Illinois University graduate.
Those seeking treatment for obesity hardly ever learned how to manage their weight, said the Jupiter resident.
And people with severe pain endured physical therapy and piles of pills but found no relief.
"One day I said 'there's got to be something better than that,' " he said.
"There's got to be something I can offer to these people that will make then better."
About five years ago, Nuchovich began reading about alternative therapies such as acupuncture and how nutrition and diet influence the inflammation that causes pain --- things, he said, medical school didn't cover.
"You learn about important conventional medicine, such as lung diseases, heart diseases and other cardiovascular diseases," he said.
Nuchovich, who has been practicing since '89, also learned the practices of alternative medicine were not widely accepted.
"I was actually told by professors of mine that (alternative medicine practices) were not to be considered and were without value.
Because of old soccer injuries, Nuchovich said, he would often get a pain in his neck and shooting pain in his shoulder.
"He put the needles in my shoulder and my neck," he says, "Not only did I fall asleep but, when I woke up, the pain was gone and I was totally relaxed."
In 2002, he made his office a "mini alternative medicine center," Nuchovich said.
To treat pain, arthritis or obesity, Nuchovich and the staff of The Jupiter Institute of the Healing Arts integrate internal medicine training with "alternative" treatments such as nutritional guidance, dietary supplements and acupuncture.
Nuchovich credits his hybrid practice with relieving people who had long suffered from problems pills didn't solve.
