Renewable energy advocate works to bring green power to Ontario

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The Toronto Star profiles Greg Kiessling, founder of Bullfrog Power and advocate for renewable electricity.

Greg Kiessling doesn't come across as a power-hungry guy --- unless you're talking about renewable electricity. The 45-year-old entrepreneur is the founder of Bullfrog Power, which when launched three months ago was dubbed the first electricity retailer in the province dedicated to selling green power. Specifically, Bullfrog is in the business of offering wind and low-impact hydro energy to Ontario consumers who don't want their monthly payments supporting nuclear and coal-fired electricity generation. "The government's got a plan to increase the amount of renewables on the grid to 5 per cent by 2007 and 10 per cent by 2010," he says. Only a few years ago, he was chief executive officer of Toronto-based Sitraka Inc., a business software firm he co-founded in 1989. "After taking a bit of a break, I decided it would be rewarding and especially challenging to create a company that was not only successful as a business but also tried to make the world a better place," he says. It didn't take him long to figure out that Ontario's energy future was at a crossroads, and that decisions on what to do with the province's dirty coal plants and aging nuclear reactors would create uncertainty in the market --- and opportunity. "I hate sitting in my house looking at the lights knowing they're being powered by smog-producing coal plants and nuclear waste. Through his private investment firm, Up Capital Energy, he contributed the necessary start-up funds and began building his executive team. Jack Gibbons, chairman of the Ontario Clean Air Alliance, says Kiessling is proof that helping the environment doesn't exclude running a sound business. "It's still in its infancy, and we've got a long way to go .I just want to keep growing it, as large as our customers will allow us to grow."
