Best Buy starts mail-in cell phone recycling program
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
The recycling program at Best Buy stores across the U.S. will raise funds for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Customers will receive a free, postage-paid cell phone donation envelope to mail old cell phones to ReCellular for recycling.
Best Buy is distributing free, postage-paid cell phone donation envelopes to customers who buy cell phones or related equipment at any store in the U.S. Any cell phone, regardless of make, model or condition, is eligible for the donation envelopes.
Customers can use the envelopes to mail old cell phones to ReCellular, Inc., the official phone recycling partner of Best Buy.
Depending on the phone's condition, ReCellular will either refurbish and resell the unit, or disassemble and recycle it in an environmentally responsible manner.
"Responsible recycling and reuse of cell phones is important, and this mail-in program makes it easier to keep them out of landfills."
For each phone mailed, a $1 donation will be made to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America to support that organization's efforts to give kids a safe place to learn and grow.
Best Buy is encouraging customers to donate enough phones to generate a minimum of $500,000 for the youth organization.
Best Buy will also continue its other existing recycling efforts, including recycling kiosks found within Best Buy stores for cell phones, ink jet cartridges, and rechargeable batteries.
Cell phones that cannot be reused are recycled, thereby preventing materials that can harm the environment from entering the solid waste stream.
ReCellular also offers free instructions for cell phone owners on how to erase all their personal data prior to donating their devices.
