BSkyB launches legal movie download service

BSkyB has two new services for digital viewers in the UK and Ireland. Sky allows viewers to legally download movies and sports highlights to their PCs at no additional charge. Users must have Microsoft Windows XP.



BSkyB has debuted two services that will be available to digital viewers in the U.K. and Ireland as part of their existing subscriptions with James Murdoch's pay-TV provider. Sky by Broadband will allow viewers to legally download a wide range of movies and Sky Sports highlights to watch on their home PC at no extra cost--although they must be using Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people) Windows XP to take advantage of the service. More than 200 movies will be available at launch, including a mix of Hollywood blockbusters such as Spider-Man 2 and The Day After Tomorrow, and more arcane fare such as Alien: The Director's Cut and Stanley Kubrick masterpiece Dr Strangelove. "The number of titles will increase over time to encompass over a thousand titles from the Sky Movies catalogue. Sky Sports subscribers will have access to over 1,000 video clips at any one time, including the better bits from Barclays (nyse: BCS - news - people) Premiership and UEFA Champions League soccer matches. The company also announced the launch of Sky by Mobile, which will provide news and sport to digital customers' mobile phones. A few handsets--including Nokia (nyse: NOK - news - people), Research In Motion's (nasdaq: RIMM - news - people) Blackberry and Motorola (nyse: MOT - news - people) models--will be initially compatible with the service. A service is already up and running for customers on Vodafone (nyse: VOD - news - people)'s 3G network. "Families' entertainment needs are changing fast and audiences increasingly expect to be able to access content whenever and wherever they want," said Richard Freudenstein, BSkyB's (nyse: BSY - news - people) chief operating officer.
