Sling Media extends its reach to the Mac

Slingbox is working on the SlingPlayer Mac which will allow Mac users to access TV programs they watch at home anywhere through the internet. The SlingMedia Mac will be available for download later in 2006.
Sling Media, the company that allows users to view programs on their living room TV sets from anywhere in the world, said on Tuesday it will extend its reach to the Mac.
The San Mateo, California-based maker of the Slingbox, a device that redirects a TV signal from a cable box, satellite receiver, or digital video recorder (DVR) and streams it via the Internet to either a Windows-based PC or Windows Mobile-based device, has targeted the Mac.
SlingPlayer Mac is still in the early testing phase, but Sling Media said it will demonstrate the capabilities of its Mac software outside the Macworld Conference and Expo taking place this week in San Francisco.
From an Internet-connected PC, viewers can change channels and navigate TV menus.
They can also watch content stored on a DVR and use some of the other available features such as the ability to pause, fast forward, and rewind live TV.
The Slingbox retails for about $250 and is available from a number of retail outlets including Circuit City and Best Buy.
Last week Sling Media announced SlingPlayer Mobile, a piece of software that allows users to watch TV from their cell phone or PDA and use those Wi-Fi or 3G-based devices to control their home TVs remotely (see Sling Extends TV Control).
A number of analysts have commented on the potential disruption the Slingbox is creating for video content providers and mobile network operators with the extension of the reach of its flagship products.
"Slingbox is basically stabbing deep into the soft underbelly of the mobile network operators' high-speed data strategy and attempting to relegate the MNO to a mere bitpipe," said Roger Entner, an analyst with Ovum, commenting on last week's announcement of SlingPlayer Mobile.
