Washington brothers develop do-it-yourself personal biodiesel processor

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Brothers Glen and Kent Blomgren are distributing a personal biodiesel processor called FuelMeister out of a Union Gap, Wash., garage, claiming just about anyone can use the approximately $3,000 system to make biodiesel out of the right mix of lye, methanol and used cooking oil, in about an hour.

It's as easy as operating a washing machine, but instead of clean clothes you finish with 40 gallons of biodiesel at the end of the spin-cycle. Two brothers --- Glen and Kent Blomgren --- are distributing a personal biodiesel processor called FuelMeister out of a Union Gap garage. The entire setup costs $3,000 and consists of some tubes, valves, plastic containers and steel drums that easily fit in a household garage. Add the right mix of lye --- available through local home-improvement stores --- and methanol to used cooking oil, and within an hour the closed system mixes and forms into biodiesel. The ingredients for biodiesel have a low flashpoint, and regular gasoline is more explosive. "This is for Mr. and Mrs. Suburbia," Glen Blomgren says. The converted fuel can be used in anything that operates on No. 2 diesel and costs just 70 cents per gallon to make, the Blomgrens say. Currently the businessmen have agreements with local Burger Kings, Taco Times and Old Town Station to receive free used vegetable oil for their customers. The Blomgren brothers hope people will purchase the units, not only so they will stay in business, but because they see the FuelMeister as a public service. According to Biodiesel.org, the official Web site for the National Biodiesel Board, the national trade association representing the industry, biodiesel is the only alternative fuel that is nontoxic, biodegradable and free of sulfur. Biodiesel is also registered with the Environmental Protection Agency as a legal motor fuel and has completed the health effects testing under the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Celebrities like Bonnie Rait and Willie Nelson are using biodiesel in their tour buses and touting the benefits of the fuel for the environment and the economy. The ingredients for biodiesel are farmed in the United States.
