Bush defends domestic spying program

President George W. Bush has berated the unknown source or sources who leaked the undercover spying program to the media, saying it has caused great harm to the United States.

US President George W. Bush on Sunday again staunchly defended a controversial domestic spying program, saying the secret eavesdropping efforts are needed to protect US citizens against potential acts of terrorism. "It seems logical to me that if we know there's a phone number associated with Al-Qaeda and/or an Al-Qaeda affiliate, and they're making phone calls, it makes sense to find out why," Bush said during a visit Sunday to a San Antonio, Texas hospital, where he met with US troops wounded in Iraq. He suggested that terrorists who struck the country on September 11, 2001 were resolved to hit America again. "They attacked us before, they will attack us again if they can," the president said. Bush also again slammed the unknown source or sources who leaked information about the undercover program to the media, saying US security may have been impaired. "The fact that somebody leaked this program causes great harm to the United States," Bush said. They listen to what you put on the air and they react," the president said. The recent revelation of the secret spy program run by the National Security Agency, under which Bush authorized a covert wiretap program targeting domestic telephone and Internet communications, has sparked a political firestorm in the United States. Bush's 2002 order enabled the National Security Agency (NSA) to monitor, without court warrants, the international telephone calls and electronic mail of US citizens with suspected ties to Al-Qaeda. The Justice Department announced Friday that it had launched an investigation into the leaking of the program's existence to the media.
