Motorola plans to put Google and Kodak into its phones

Google, Motorola and Kodak have come together to put Google's internet search technology in Motorola phones to make on-the-go web surfing and photo swapping more accessible.

MOTOROLA plans to put Google's internet search technology into its mobile phone software and work with Kodak to make on-the-go web surfing and photo swapping easier. As mobile operators around the world work to add everything from music and video to photography and web surfing to their offerings, Google, Motorola and Kodak want to be the driving forces to make such services easier to use. Google chief executive Eric Schmidt said his company had made the agreement because he believed that mobile devices would be where future consumers accessed the internet most often. He said he expected that much of the usage will come from phones that can pinpoint user location with localised search software. At least one analyst believed that quicker access to web search would lead many more people to use the web on phones. "We're convinced that having a great experience on the handsets not only helps us sell more handsets but also enables us to command a higher ASP (average selling price)," Motorola's corporate vice-president Scott Durchslag said. Mr Durchslag said consumer trials with Google-equipped phones had shown that the power of the search giant's brand had significantly increased web access using. Motorola planned to launch the phones with Google this year. Mr Schmidt said Google would work to embed its search engine in all of Motorola's future phones. Motorola also hopes to increase use of photo swapping on mobile phones by working with Kodak, bringing out phones this year that will send, ready for print or store a photo at the push of a button. Kodak has also agreed to supply Motorola with camera hardware and software for its phones, and the companies plan to share intellectual property as part of the agreement.
