Lenovo plans to sell ThinkPad laptops that have built-in mobile internet access with the Cingular BroadbandConnect service. Lenovo aims to be the world's "most competitive" PC maker within five years.

China's Lenovo Group Ltd., the world's third-largest maker of personal computers, plans to sell laptops with built-in mobile Internet access using technology from Cingular Wireless LLC. ThinkPad notebook computers equipped with the Cingular BroadbandConnect service will be available in the second quarter, the companies said in a PRNewswire statement Wednesday. Also Wednesday, T-Mobile International AG, the wireless unit of Deutsche Telekom AG, said it will introduce laptop computers with built-in modems to increase use of its mobile Web services in Germany, Europe's largest cellular market. The company plans to start selling laptop computers made by Fujitsu Siemens Computers Holding BV when it starts its so-called high-speed downlink packet access services at the Cebit technology fair in March, spokeswoman Marion Kessing said in a phone interview. The technology allows wireless Internet data downloads five times faster than currently available. The Lenovo agreement is the company's second with a wireless carrier since Chairman Yang Yuanqing said in September that the company aims to become the world's "most competitive" PC maker within five years. Lenovo, which has its U.S. headquarters in Purchase, N.Y., announced plans Sept. 20 to sell laptops with Verizon Wireless Internet access technology to help boost U.S. sales. Atlanta-based Cingular on Dec. 6 introduced the broadband service in 16 cities to match competitors, including Verizon Wireless. Cingular is a joint venture of AT&T Inc., based in San Antonio, Texas, and Atlanta-based BellSouth Corp. Dell and Hewlett-Packard, the two largest PC makers, have announced similar Internet-access services.
