Chicago PD warns of sales of call information

Locatecell.com sells lists of calls made on cell phones and on land lines by anyone, including police officers and federal agents. The site was paid $160 by the FBI for the records of an FBI agent. Locatecell got them within 3 hours.

The Sun Times reports dozens of online services are selling lists of cell phone calls.
Locatecell.com sells lists of calls made both on cell phones and on land lines.
It doesn't take a lot of time to retrieve information.
The FBI paid Locatecell.com $160 to buy the records for an FBI agent's cell phone.
They got the list within 3 hours.
A criminal could use such records to expose an informant who regularly calls police.
A suspicious husband or wife could use such a service to check up on the spouse's cell phone calls.
Employers could check up on employees' use of private cell phones.
The Sun-Times paid $110 to Locatecell.com to purchase a one-month record of calls for a reporter's company cell phone.
The paper e-mailed the telephone number to the service along with a credit card number.
Locatecell.com e-mailed a list of 78 telephone numbers the reporter called on his cell phone between Nov 19 and Dec 17.
The list included calls to law enforcement sources, story subjects and other Sun-Times reporters and editors.
