Michigan to begin a study of obesity and the metabolic differences between people

According to Crainsdetroit.com, the University of Michigan Metabolomics and Obesity Center is undertaking a new study of obesity that will focus on what causes metabolisms to vary in the rate at which they break down food.
The University of Michigan Health System on Wednesday said it is launching a new center to study obesity.
The UM Metabolomics and Obesity Center will study how the body breaks down and uses food, and how metabolism varies among individuals to help explain why some people retain weight, while others lose it.
The new center will bring together physicians and researchers from across the UM campus and will help launch new projects by granting seed funding, train new scientists in metabolic research and transfer research findings to practical information to help overweight and obese people.
About two-thirds of Americans, including a higher number of children, are overweight or obese and are more likely to suffer from illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and bone and joint problems.
"Obesity is a huge public health challenge, but also a major scientific challenge," Charles Burant, center director and a UM metabolism researcher, said in a statement.
"We still don't understand why the same food intake can lead to weight gain in one person but not another, nor why diabetes develops in some overweight people but not others."
