Dietician describes how trans fats damage your heart

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Savannah's NBC affiliate gets the scoop from dietician Lisa Herzig about the impact of trans fats on your cardiovascular health.

Trans fats are found in processed foods like cereals, cookies, cakes and crackers. Trans fats, like margarine, are created when hydrogen is added to vegtable oil. It's a common practice, which adds flavor and freshness. The FDA is requiring food labels include trans fats in 2006, as a result many companies are phasing them out. Dietician, Lisa Herzig, says some are trying to disguise them. "You see this long list of ingredients. What you want to look for is partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated source of fat. Which if we read through, here we go right here, margarine and partially hydrogenated soybean oil," she says. Lisa says you should always read ingredients and add up the fats on labels. Saturated fats, trans fats, and the healthier polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats should all add up to the total fats. If they don't, the manufacturer isn't telling you something. Herzig suggests keeping trans fats under 3 grams per day which could mean skipping some of your favorite desserts, to have a heart healthy diet. - Skip foods with hydrogenated oil as an ingredient. - Avoid fatty meats and whole milk dairy products. - Don't believe all product claims of "zero trans fat". The FDA allows the claim as long as they contain less than .49 grams. Do the math yourself and see if each fat listing adds up to the product's total fat.
