Carolina news station informs citizens about bone diseases

WSCOTV.com provides readers with updated information on bone growth and osteoporosis.
During childhood, the body builds more bone that is lost to accommodate a child's growing skeleton.
Girls generally develop about 90 percent of their bone mass (the amount of bone tissue in the skeleton) by the time they reach 18.
For a while, bone tissue that is lost is replaced by new bone at nearly an equal pace (with only minimal loss of bone).
Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is condition in which the bones have lost a significant amount of bone mass and fracture easily.
According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, about 10 million Americans have osteoporosis.
The most common sites of fracture are the hips, spine and wrist.
Preventing Osteoporosis Bone loss can't be avoided.
The best protection against osteoporosis is to build as much peak bone mass as possible during childhood and young adulthood.
When bone loss is significant, doctors can prescribe medications to slow bone loss or increase bone building.
Researchers are testing a new type of treatment for bone building, called an oscillating (vibration) plate.
The patient, who doesn't feel the vibrations, simply stands on the plate for about 10-20 minutes a day.
Doctors say the vibrations stress the muscles, which in turn, stimulates bone.
In one study with sheep, researchers gave ewes 20 minutes of high-frequency vibration a day, five days a week.
One group used the oscillating plate for ten minutes a day, while the second group received no treatment.
Children and women who are at future risk for osteoporosis could use the vibration plate while doing simple chores in the morning, like washing the face or brushing the teeth.
Doctors say the oscillating plate appears to be most useful for building bone in the legs and spine.
