Reporter studies the effects of yoga on back pain patients

Kellye Lynn, reporting for a Baltimore-based CBS affiliate, studies the claim that yoga can cure people ailing from back pain.
Undated Yoga has been around for centuries, but it's taken a while for modern medicine to get on board with all its benefits.
Now a new study supports one belief: yoga can do wonders for back pain.
Anne Marie Salmeri, an avid runner for years, likes to stay active- but had to quit because of constant back pain.
"On a scale of one to ten, (my pain) was probably a seven," she says.
However, after just two months of doing the stretching and strengthening poses, Ann Marie says her back pain is much better and she's able to jog again.
Dr. Mallika Marshall of CBS news in Boston, MA says, "Millions of Americans suffer lower back pain, and many may be hesitant to believe yoga can help," but a new study in the annals of internal medicine says the ancient excercise can be effective.
Mount Sinai's Dr. Joseph Herrera has started prescribing yoga for some of his back pain patients.
"Not only are you addressing the physical component of low back pain, you're also addressing the psychological component," he says.
The psychological component involves breathing and meditaion, and it's not just for bakc pain.
Studies have shown that yoga can improve symptoms involved with asthma, arthritis and even diseases like aids and cancer.
Some believe that the practice settles the mind and body.
Similar relaxers like massage, accupuncture and even prayer have been shown to improve health.
But instructor, April Puchiata, believes yoga offers another benefit.
You do a lot of abdominal strengthening which helps back pain.
It strengthens the back muscles," says Puchiata.
Whatever it is, Anne Marie is happy with results and plans to stick with yoga on a regular basis.
