Researcher believes processed meats contribute to colon cancer

Douglas Robertson of the VA Medical Center in White River Junction, Vt., has published a study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology that suggests processed meats are linked to the development of precancerous colon polyps.

Patients who consume diets high in processed meats have a greater risk of developing pre-cancerous polyps of the colon, according to a study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. About 5 to 10 percent of benign colon polyps become cancerous over time, doctors say. Researchers led by physician Douglas Robertson of the VA Medical Center in White River Junction, Vt., followed more than 1,500 patients for five years. Study participants underwent baseline colonoscopies and two follow-up screenings. Those who followed diets high in certain unprocessed white meats, such as chicken, were less likely to develop the polyps, researchers found. Rebekah Wyrick, education coordinator for the Alzheimer's Association Desert Southwest Chapter, will lead a six-part class on the progressive brain disorder. Topics will include understanding Alzheimer's and dementia, coping skills for caregivers, communication challenges and activities for people with dementia. Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, gradually destroys brain cells and the ability to perform daily activities. Healthful eating plays a role in preventing Type 2 diabetes and in managing the disease in those who have it. Registered dietitians from Sun Health will address both groups in classes beginning this month. The sessions are "Nutrition for Pre-Diabetes" and "Live Well With Diabetes." The second class also will be taught by fitness specialists. It will include information on physical activities, glucose self-monitoring, carbohydrate counting and stress management. Details: "Nutrition for Pre-Diabetes" will meet 9-10:30 a.m. Jan. 11 in the Papago Room at Sun Health Del E. Webb Hospital, 14502 W. Meeker Blvd., Sun City West. There will be two sessions of the four-part "Live Well With Diabetes" series, held in two locations: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 23, Feb. 6, Feb. 20 and March 6 in the White Tanks Room at Del E. Webb Hospital; and 9:30-11:30 a.m.
