Study claims short-term changes to dietary calcium will not alter metabolism

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has published a study authored by Dr. Wim H. M. Saris from the University of Maastricht, which shows that changes to dietary calcium over the course of a week do not significantly impact metabolism.
Modifying calcium intake for seven days does not influence substrate metabolism, energy metabolism, or expression of genes related to fat metabolism, according to a report in the December issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
"Although changes in dietary calcium intake may induce differences in energy and fat metabolism that could contribute to a better regulation of body weight, these differences are very hard to detect in a randomized controlled trial," Dr. Wim H. M. Saris from the University of Maastricht, the Netherlands told Reuters Health.
The 24-hour average respiratory quotient did not differ among high-fat/high dairy, high-fat/low dairy, and low-fat/low dairy diets, the authors report.
Similarly, the three diets brought no differences in plasma levels of calcium, free fatty acids, glucose, insulin, or glycerol.
Serum concentrations of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 fell most markedly with the high-fat/high dairy diet, decreased to a lesser extent with the high-fat/low dairy diet, and increased with the low-fat/low dairy diet, the researchers note.
Thus the relation between intake of dairy products and calcium and body weight that has been observed in epidemiologic reports may not be mediated by 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 but by other mechanisms, the investigators suggest.
"For example," they note, "the decreased fat absorption that is related to an increased calcium intake.
In fact, Dr. Saris added that three further dietary studies investigating this and other phenomena are currently being planned.
