Americans love popping pills to create the illusion of health, columnist says

For the Post Chronicle, Felicia Benamon writes about America's addiction to prescription medications, which has become an epidemic over the last 20 years.

I hate to say it, but we are the most drugged up nation on this planet. And I'm not talking about illegal drugs, I'm talking about prescription drugs. What we should be asking our doctor is "What kinds of foods can I place in my diet to possibly reverse my current condition?". If you want to improve your health, GO NATURAL! HIGHER amounts of vitamin D could help make it easier to breathe, according to findings released yesterday. Researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand found people with higher levels of the vitamin in their systems showed better lung function than those with lower amounts. "Although there is a definite relationship between lung function and vitamin D, it is unclear if increases in vitamin D through supplements or dietary intake will actually improve lung function in patients with chronic respiratory diseases," Dr Peter Black, who led the study, said. Dr Rosalind Wright, a professor at Harvard Medical School's Department of Society, Human Development, and Health, said the vitamin could be an easy way to boost lung function. Other recent studies have suggested Vitamin D may help strengthen bones as well as prevent some cancers and multiple sclerosis. It is now said that tea has benefits to preventing ovarian cancer in women. The heart-health and cancer-preventive benefits of black and green teas are well-publicized. And more research is under way; some studies suggest tea may also increase bone-mineral density, boost immunity, fight cavities, combat diabetes, and reduce body fat. Certain antioxidants can protect against exposure to ultraviolet light and its consequences, such as sun damage and skin cancer. It's also a natural deterrent to catching the common cold. So we should not neglect natural remedies that can help us live a fuller, happy life. People will be eating healthy, using what nature has already provided to make sure that we prolong our lives.
