Austria prosecutes British historian for denying the Holocaust

The Kalamazoo Gazette covers the strange case of David Irving, a British Historian who denies the events of the Holocaust and now faces a possible 20-year prison sentence in Austria, where it is illegal to deny the Holocaust.
There's an interesting legal case in Austria, where a man could get 20 years in prison for denying that there was a World War II Holocaust which claimed some 6 million innocent lives.
Many people would say that David Irving's elevator doesn't go anywhere near the top floor.
Nevertheless, if he's disposed to deny perhaps the greatest crime in human history, couldn't that view be simply considered as a ridiculous opinion flying in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary?
Not in Austria, which makes Holocaust denial a crime.
Irving is a right-wing British historian who has written dozens of books.
It has been established beyond any reasonable doubt that millions of Jews and other subjugated individuals -- men, women and children whose countries were conquered by Hitler -- were imprisoned, executed in gas chambers, incinerated in ovens or bulldozed into lime pits.
Dwight D. Eisenhower was so sickened by what he saw at a concentration camp near a German town that he required the civilians in that community to come to the camp and view the grisly sight with their own eyes.
Films of that episode have been seen the world over.
Eisenhower said written statements up to that time had not described the full horror of what he had seen.
There was much public disbelief then and, as Irving's claims attest, there still is today.
Yet, if Irving were in America, he couldn't be threatened with criminal charges because our First Amendment would allow him the freedom of speech.
It may seem abhorrent to some people to allow such comment, but Americans know that our precious freedoms protect us from the proliferation of oppression that is the breeding ground for such atrocities.
