Colorado researchers find cardiovascular exercise delays congestive heart failure

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

A study led by professor Russell Moore at the University of Colorado has found that exercise can delay cthe onset of ongestive heart failure.

Exercise is not only the most successful way of getting a great looking body, but as recent studies show, it can also be the deciding factor when it comes to delaying congestive heart failure (CHF). A new study on mice that had genetic characteristics for spontaneously developing heart failure showed that they lived significantly longer when they were made to exercise moderately on a treadmill. The study, conducted at the University of Colorado, showed that the exercise protocol, the equivalent of daily, leisurely strolls in humans, extended the life expectancy of the rat study group by at least 10 percent to 15 percent. Professor Russell Moore, who led the study, said that if the model could be applied to people then it was possible that low-intensity exercise is likely to have a beneficial effect on humans in the early stages of congestive heart failure. "Assuming the results are applicable to humans, low-intensity exercise is likely to have benefits to humans in early stages of congestive heart failure," he said. He added that studies conducted by different institutions also supported the findings that exercise was beneficial to reducing the risk of heart failure. "Our study, coupled with several human studies conducted elsewhere, shows a definite trend indicating that moderate intensity exercise has a potential role in stemming the downward spiral in heart failure," he said. According to statistics CHF is a major health problem in the US with about 65 million Americans are afflicted with hypertension and nearly five million of them suffering from CHF. In addition, about 75 percent of patients diagnosed with CHF die within eight years.
