According to a survey of six cities carried out under a UN Foundation initiative known as Charcai, 71 percent of married women are unaware of HIV/AIDS in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
Seventy one per cent of married women are unaware of HIV/AIDS in Udaipur in Rajasthan and 40 per cent girls in the age group of 15-18 years in the city already have one or more children, according to a baseline survey carried out under a UN Foundation initiative in six cities.
The survey was carried out last year by the initiative Charcai (Coordinated HIV/AIDS Response for Capacity Building and Awareness), an effort funded by UN Foundation and the Royal Netherlands Embassy in partnership with governments in national, state and district, NGOs and academic institutions.
The project, being implemented in Bellary (Karnataka), Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), Udaipur (Rajasthan), Kanpur (UP), Kishanganj (Bihar) and Aizwal (Mizoram), aims at reducing vulnerabilities of young women in the age group of 13-25 years to sexually-transmitted infections and HIV.
"Udaipur in Rajasthan faces a greater threat although the state is considered a low prevalence state.
High poverty levels, low employment opportunities, repeated droughts and subsequent economic pressure cause out-migration of men," says a document 'a Commitment to Protect the Young and Vulnerable', which carries highlights of the baseline findings.
"Migration is generally to high-prevalence locations like Mumbai and Kolkata.
Infections contracted here are very likely to be carried back to families in the district," it said.
The survey also found misconceptions about HIV transmission was high and condom usage low in Bihar's Kishanganj.
