NBC targets common mistakes women make in health-related decisions

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

NBC's Health Watch looks at areas of women's health that are often neglected, including flossing, weight lifting and getting adequate amounts of sleep.

You have to sort out good from bad fats, figure out the best exercise routine and, of course, find the time to do it all while getting some sleep. But, according to Prevention magazine there are six stupid health mistakes women tend to make while thinking they are acting healthy. Women love their salads, but beware, a salad lunch can easily turn from light fare to fat-laden with your choice of ingredients. "We can fatten up with bacon bits. Be careful and watch portion size -- it adds lots of calories and fat," said Stephanie Levinson, a register dietitian at Holy Redeemer Hospital. If you are trying to drop pounds, step on and take notice of weight gain or loss. Americans spend $600 million a year on procedures to whiten their teeth, but they don't even spend an easy two minutes doing what the dentist recommends -- flossing. They don't realize the female body doesn't have the genetics to bulk up like a man," Levinson said. Weight lifting helps strengthen bone mass, which wards off osteoporosis. When you gain muscle, you burn more fat and muscle takes up less space on the body. Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among women, yet 40 percent of women over 40 haven't had a mammogram in the past year. So doctors say that if you are if you are feeling fatigued, get a checkup. The risk of sleep deprivation goes way beyond waking up groggy and relying on a java jolt. Women who sleep less than eight hours a night over a 10-year period are at a slightly higher risk of heart disease, plus consistent sleep aids in weight loss.
