Ophthalmologist explains how the eye reveals a patient's cholesterol levels
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Ophthalmologic surgeon Dr. Sheri Rowen talks with wbalchannel.com about how a yellow ring, called an arcus, around the retina points to problems with a patient's cholesterol level.
Your eyes may reveal more than their color.
Anna Florence-Williams had cataracts removed in both her eyes this fall after ophthalmologic surgeon Dr. Sheri Rowen's diagnosis.
"She said I had cholesterol in my system.
She knew I had high cholesterol, which I do -- I take medication for it," Florence-Williams said.
"As the LDL, or bad cholesterol, is increased and HDL good cholesterol is decreased, that correlates with the formation of this arcus," said Rowen, of Baltimore's Mercy Medical Center.
Rowen explained that the arcus is a ring of yellow around the retina.
She said that indicates that the patient should check their cholesterol.
"When they say (the eyes are) the reflection to the soul, it's also the mirror to the health of the body.
We can detect diabetes, high blood pressure, and now, we can pick up high cholesterol," Rowen said.
Florence-Williams already knew about her cholesterol, and as for her vision after cataract surgery, she has 20/20 vision in both eyes.
