New York needs wind farms to achieve green energy goals

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The Democrat and Chronicle discusses the pros and cons of wind power projects, but ultimately concludes that this form of energy is a viable option for New York in its quest to diversify its energy sources.

At least two things are known about attaining energy independence in America. This country's dependence on foreign oil supplies, and the impermanence of those supplies, is perhaps the greatest threat to national security. Second, reaching this kind of independence will be difficult and expensive. It will entail commitment and sacrifice, on a national scale and on the local level. And that applies to the Rochester region. Currently, rural communities in the Finger Lakes are confronting the promise, and imposition, of wind power. The huge turbines that harness the wind and convert it to electricity are not easily accepted by some residents used to untrammeled landscapes. Developers and government must do all they can to respect property rights and individual concerns. But wind power is one route to energy self-sufficiency as a nation. That's a goal that all should be willing to strive for, even if it means man-made towers, and the whoosh of big blades, on rural hilltops. No one should expect wind power alone to replace fossil fuels as America's prime energy source. Tax credits and surcharges have understandably driven energy entrepreneurs toward the wind option. But they're getting some pushback from communities whose approval is needed if the wind turbines are to be located where interference is limited and the wind is plentiful. Tom Golisano, the Paychex founder and possible gubernatorial candidate, is the most noted opponent of what he and others contend is a ill-considered frenzy by business to cash in on the windfall. Government has to guide the process, not open the floodgates. But the larger point is that New York and America must diversify its energy sources and stop acting as if foreign oil will be there for us forever.
