Senate leader proposes investigation into testimony of oil executives

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid has issued a public call on U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to investigate the recent testimony of oil company executives who may have lied under oath.
The top Senate Democrat on Thursday renewed his charge that oil company executives appeared to have lied under oath during recent testimony about skyrocketing energy prices, and called for a federal probe.
Leading oil company executives have long denied taking part in a secretive energy task force run in 2001 by Vice President Dick Cheney, and did so again when appearing at a US Senate hearing last month.
But after White House records obtained last month by The Washington Post refuted that, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid called on US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to investigate.
"I find it deeply disturbing that energy company CEOs may have made false statements before Congress about their involvement in the secretive Cheney energy task force," Reid said in a statement.
"Despite the vice presidents active efforts to thwart open and transparent government, Congress has the right and the responsibility to seek and obtain information from witnesses that is honest and complete," he said.
Reid said Gonzales should "launch an investigation into this testimony, to ascertain whether false statements were made," so that "industry leaders are held accountable for their words and actions."
