Canadian government may soon regulate the practice of traditional Chinese medicine

Canadian Health minister George Smitherman has proposed legislation that would regulate the practice of traditional Chinese medicine in Ontario, a move that some believe would accord it the respect it deserves as a long-established health profession.
Health minister George Smitherman has tabled legislation to make traditional Chinese medicine a fully regulated health profession in Ontario.
Known as TCM, Chinese traditional medicine is currently un-regulated.
"We believe that the [people] who practice in this area deserve a say in how their professions are run over things such as admission to the practice, for example, and dealing with complaints," said Smitherman, to the house.
"We also believe that all citizens deserve to know exactly what they're getting, and that's a basic principle of consumer protection, and it applies even more strongly in matters of health."
The legislation sets out standards of practice for TCM and acupuncture, and creates a college to govern the profession.
