A Warsaw college student develops a computer program to track and place bids the last second of an online auction. Tomyczyk was a frequent buyer on Allegro, a European Internet auction similar to eBay, and preferred to place bids in the closing seconds of an auction but grew frustrated at losing bidding wars. Tomczyk says, "Most bids are won and lost in the final seconds and I thought if I could develop a program to time the bid placement, I could win many more bids and keep the process from eroding into a bidding spiral." The automated program quickly gained a huge cult following and spread via word of mouth, through e-mails of friends and online chat rooms. Tomczyk explains, "I began charging for the service when I could no longer pay the bills out of my own pocket." Today, Snip's global customer base numbers 125,000 users worldwide, making over 280,000 automated bids per month. Snip's customer demographics reflect the varying popularity of online auctions from country to country. Tomczyk says, "Within Europe, we've had great success in Germany, Great Britain and Poland, but online auctions are not popular in France, Italy and Spain." Tomczyk has now set his sights on the U.S. market, "We currently have about 30,000 Snip users in the U.S. The potential for Snip in the U.S. is huge because of the popularity of eBay in that market.
